Nayll Swatch & Review: My Custom Polishes

By now I'm sure a lot of you have heard about Nayll, an innovative site where you can select bases, glitters, and shimmers to make and name your own polishes.  Each bottle is individually mixed, and they even come with the name you choose printed on the bottle below the brand logo.  It's a pretty nifty idea, especially for people who want to try their hand at frankening without the mess and expense of buying costly supplies and mixing polishes.

There is also a line of pre-mixed polishes you can choose from, but those are being saved for another post.  Today I'm showing you the three polishes I created; they are, of course, all themed around Doctor Who, haha!  Continued after the jump...

The first polish I made is called The Definite Article, and is inspired by the fourth Doctor and his crazy scarf.  This one is super fun!

I tried to match the colours as best I could; this polish is a clear base packed with caramel squares, red holo squares, silver holo hex, matte gold hex, and green circle glitters.  I used one dabbed coat over LaCC 1971, and topped it with one coat of Nayll Smooth It Out Glitter Top Coat, for which I'll write a review in the next post along with the pre-mixed polishes.

Raxacoricofallapatorius is a shimmer polish, inspired by the home planet of the Raxacoricofallapatorians.  The atmosphere on this planet is purple, and the colour can supposedly be seen from space.

This polish is a mix of the Royal Purple Shimmer and Night Sky Shimmer.  I was honestly hoping for a dark purple shimmer, but it came out more silvery than I had anticipated, making it read a bit frosty.  Formula was on the brushstrokey side, but careful application helped minimize that.  Topped with one coat of Seche Vite.

*Edit: I've heard back from Sara, the maker of Nayll, and she says that mixing any shimmer with the Carbon Black shimmer will make a darker version, not the Night Sky shimmer like I used.  My computer monitor is a bit washed out, so they appeared very similar when I was choosing; just something to be aware of! For more info, see her post in the comments below.*

Midnight was, in my opinion, probably the scariest episode of new Who.  Yes, even more so than Blink.  I'm not really sure why, but I got seriously creeped out.

We don't see much of the planet in the episode, but I based the polish off what little we do see!

This polish is a black jelly base with mini silver and turquoise holo hex, turquoise holo flakes, and silver flakes.  The jelly base isn't very opaque, so I layered just one coat over LaCC 1999.  I love how glitter-packed this one is, and how deep it looks with even just one coat.  On top of that, the holo glitters are super reflective and don't get overwhelmed by the black jelly base at all!  I've also topped this one off with a coat of the Smooth It Out Glitter Top Coat.

I think that Midnight is my favourite, but I also really love how fun The Definite Article is!  And, to be honest, even though I'm not a huge fan of the shimmer, I'm so excited to have a polish called Raxacoricofallapatorius, haha!!

You can create and purchase Nayll polishes online here.  I think this site is an amazing idea, and I'm excited to see what creations other customers come up with!  What do you think?  :)

  1. Ooh, such beautiful polishes! Midnight is definitely my favourite of these three :) (Although I personally found Blink much scarier than Midnight. Blink almost made me crap my pants. *shudder*)

  2. Oh wow I love all the polishes you created! I think Nayll is such a great idea and they have a lot of choice in colours and glitter! I'm also a big Doctor Who fan so I love all the names and the inspirations of your polishes! I actually really like all three of these, they each are very different but verrrrry pretty!! :)

  3. Awesome pics Emma!
For future reference anything that mixes with Carbon Black will become a dark shade of the light color. For example, mixing the Royal Purple with Carbon Black shimmer will create a dark purple. Also, you can now add shimmers to the jelly bases, so this would have looked awesome with the Plum jelly!
If anyone is ever concerned on how something will look just email me and I'll help you make the right choices for your polish sara@nayll.com :)
